The Convict Trail
The historic 1820's convict built road, the original road from
Sydney to Newcastle/the Hunter and beyond.
Nearby at Wisemans Ferry is the access point to the historic 1820's
convict built road, the original road from Sydney to Newcastle/the Hunter and
beyond. This old road crosses the river at Wisemans Ferry and begins climbing toward the
north. Its historical significance lays in the fact that it was the first road northwards
and was built entirely by convict labour and as such is a permanent monument to them.
Using only hand tools and gunpowder, they built the road against enormous difficulties
including poor food and frequent floggings. They solved engineering problems in the form
of great walls with abutments and stone bridges across streams. Many died where they
worked, there graves unmarked today.
Dame Mary Gilmore in her poem "Old Botany Bay" wrote these
lines:
"I am he
who paved the way,
that you might walk
at your ease today
I split the rock;
I felled the tree;
The nation was-
Because of me!"
The Convict Trail is very well sign posted by the National Parks and
Wildlife and is an easy walk.
